Freud is well known for his theory on a mother and her son, or the Oedipus Complex. Huxley ties this theory into the relationship Linda has with her son. Aldous Huxley’s ability to grab the audience’s attention with his outrageous, yet shockingly true allegations of a fictitious world, created a vision of a futuristic lifestyle unthought-of prior to Brave New World. With the use of symbolism the audience is able to make a connection between the world they are accustomed to, and the frightful reality of the future. Huxley’s
History and Theory (Name) PSY/504 (Date) (University) (Facilitator) History and Theory Psychology has changed over the past several decades. Theories once thought to be new and difficult to prove are the base of other theories. Theorists like Sigmund Freud and Carl Rogers are still discussed in modern psychology. Freud is best known for his theories of the unconscious mind and the defence mechanism of repression. He is also renowned for his redefinition of sexual desire as the primary motivational energy of human life which is directed toward a wide variety of objects; as well as his therapeutic techniques, including his theory of transference in the therapeutic relationship and the presumed value of dreams as sources of insight into unconscious desires. Freud is often referred to as "the father of psychoanalysis" and his work has been highly influential making such notions as the unconscious, the Oedipus complex, defence mechanisms, Freudian slips and dream symbolism popular. Freud proposed that the psyche could be divided into three parts: Ego, super-ego, and id. The id is known as the child-like portion of the psyche that is very impulsive and only takes into account what it wants and disregards all consequences.

The biopsychological approach includes an assumption that biological events can cause mental consequences and vise versa. The main assumption is that the mental process and biological events are directly linked together and work as one. The history of biological psychology dates all the way back to the Greeks.
