Most high school students choose university study as their academic path after high school graduation. Due to the differences between school and university, most new university students have difficulty with some issues. This essay will present some arguments in favour of universities supporting students in making the transition to university life. The first reason why universities should help students is that high school and university differ considerably so students find university study difficult. Firstly, the role of high school teachers differs greatly from the role of university lecturers and professors. Unlike high school teachers whose job is to teach and ensure the work completion at a fundamental level of education, university lecturers and professors mostly provide students tasks to do and some academic skills (Top universities 2011). Due to this difference, students should voluntarily spend time on studying outside class. A significant difference from school is that university facilitators do not criticise or complain students about deadlines or even tell how much time students should spend on studying (Swain 2008). Finishing the assignments and doing independent learning outside class are students’ responsibility. University could instruct students how to study independently. The second reason why universities should support students is that time management is an important university skill. Firstly, first-year students need to know how to manage their time effectively because they are now allowed to do that. According to Reed (2010), the time table is arranged and managed for school students, whereas it is required that students individually organize their time.
