Johnson 1 Tim Johnson Professor Thomas English 101 October 9, 2014 Why pro athletes choose to use performance-enhancing drugs? Most people see pro athletes as superheroes. They have amazing athletic abilities that everyone enjoys watching and want to be around. Pro athletes are living out their dreams of getting paid millions of dollars to play a sport they have played since they were kids. Pro athletes are also viewed as winners because they perform at such a higher level than the average athlete.
The only problem with that rule change was that it was very limited use of instant replay. With the new rule, umpires could only review homeruns, whether they had actually gone over the fence, or if they were fair or foul. They were allowed to check nothing else by instant replay and that became a major problem in Major League Baseball. Since instant replay was so limited, many calls have been called wrong and have cost teams wins, perfect games, which is one of the biggest achievements for a pitcher and even World Series titles. Instant replay should be used for more than just reviewing homeruns, they should be used to help correct umpires mistakes but not as extensive as correcting ball or strike calls.
It needs to be solv ed. There is no one I’ve talked to that can say it is not a problem.” President Bush also mentioned the problem of steroids in baseball in last year’s State of the Union address. If it is a big enough problem for the President of United States to address to all Americans, it is obviously a problem baseball has. Not only are steroids cheating, it is a very wrong and lazy way to become the player you want to be. Success takes practice and many hours of dedicated hard work, not just an injection that will do it for you.
Then he was caught taking steroids, and at the time his hitting stats were the best in the league batting at a whopping .451. As I said before it is unfair to those players not using steroids because their abilities are lower than the other players. This is one of the few new infamous changes of the game today. Moving on to the next thing involving steroids in baseball. The players can have their life and baseball career uprooted by the use of steroids.
General Environment In each of the 7 dimensions, you should describe the dimension relative to both the industry and the firm’s position within the industry relative to the environmental dimension. Be sure to provide support for your statements. Demographic- Under Armour is popular among athletes of all ages due to its sports apparel products that are supposed to help improve performance. Over the past couple of decades performance-enhancing drugs and steroids have become more of a part of mainstream culture. Performance-enhancing drugs have become a great problem very quickly and are just now being addressed among major sports. Steroids were originally meant to be used to treat medical conditions or to recover faster from an injury. There are many different reasons why people use performance-enhancing drugs. Now performance-enhancing drugs are being used more then ever by athletes to improve their athletic abilities.
In recent times the drugs have become more sophisticated and are made to target a wide range of sporting activities. Anabolic steroids or Testosterone for instance is mainly used in power sports like sprinting, weight lifting and cycling as it helps build increased muscle mass and strength, or in smaller doses can help with muscle recovery. Anabolic steroids were banned from sporting in 1975 after a test was developed to detect there use. Then in 1983 caffeine was also banned this was followed by testosterone, blood doping and Erythropoietin (EPO), although accurate tests for their detection was not found until 2000. ( USADA CEO Travis Tygart 2012) Said, ‘Nobody wins when an athlete decides to cheat with dangerous performance enhancing drugs, but clean athletes at every level expect those of us here on their behalf, to pursue the truth to ensure the win-at-all-cost culture does not permanently overtake fair, honest competition.
The use of steroids not only will increase their level of play but also will increase their confidence level. The author of the article, “Steroids: The Good”, says, “One of the best Androgenic effects of steroids such as testosterone is that they help you think. Being in the zone and that state of complete focus are aided by high testosterone levels” (Ray). Due to the person taking it, the person will think they are more opt to do better because they are on this performance enhancing drug. For example, a baseball player takes steroids.
Despite the large use of steroids in bodybuilding today, they did not always exist in the sport of bodybuilding. Both Steve Reeves and Jack Lalanne (aka the godfather of fitness) were noted on many occasions to speak out against steroid use and how it is hurting the spirit of bodybuilding. Back in the golden days of bodybuilding, a competitor’s size was not the most important factor. To win a bodybuilding show, an athlete had to not only have size but also have great symmetry, the right proportions of body parts, and great definition. Back in the day it was all about building the perfect healthy physique that anyone would admire, but now it’s all about piling on mountains of muscle and trying to look “freakish” rather than perfect.
Imagine having a great baseball career available to you if wanted it. What if it was as easy as getting an injection? That dream is a reality, courtesy of steroids. As long as you have money and time to work out, you can be a great baseball player, all because of science. Imagine it – the money, the fame, the attention, anything and everything you could ever want.
