The minimum wage policy, known as the lowest hourly pay that employers should legally pay to workers, has been imposed for almost 3 years in Hong Kong. Yet, the problem “Whether the minimum wages should be increased?” still sparks as a hot issue among the public. Parties involved are mainly into two groups- employees and employers. The grassroots are fighting for their dignity and arguing for the minimum wages which they endorse the policy but some of them are opposed to the introducing of the minimum wages. On the other hand, many employers fight against this policy claiming that they cannot bear the burden of high production cost. The objective of setting up the minimum wage level is to protect the welfare of employees and improve their quality of life. However, can it work as we expect? This essay aims to justify the feasibility and analyze the viewpoints of raising the minimum wage level towards different parties- employees, employers and government. Korth, the author of the blog, thinks that minimum wage helps protect the lower limit on wages of the employees. Without the policy, low-skilled workers may have less salary than other employees who are well educated or high skilled because of their low bargaining ability. Under the wage exploitation, long-firing operation and unfair work treatment, low-income employees are lack of confidence. He deems that the policy can allow them to become more confident and strengthen their self-esteem which are useful to personal development. Chow Chuen Ho, Director of the Hong Kong Energy Studies Centre, is in favor of the plan (increase in minimum wage).
