Should Cars be more Efficient SCI207: Dependence of Man on the Environment Instructor: Rebecca Gillaspy May 9, 2012 In these periods of rapid growth and multiplicity, efficiency has become more valuable and desirable. It seems that currently resources have become more abundant, and the auto industry is also growing at an exponential rate. In our society auto efficiency may have become more favorable in regards to our personal freedom. The issue evolves when efficiency threatens the freedom of personal choice and space. The probability of people choosing efficiency is slim to none. Fuel efficient cars provide numerous benefits over the non-efficient competitors. Consumers can benefit a lot when it comes to fuel efficient hybrid vehicles or even those non-hybrid vehicles that have high fuel economy. Our environment also gains a lot when these types of vehicles are driven. Mainly because fuel efficient vehicles get better gas mileage due to the smaller gasoline engines, which releases fewer pollution emissions and decreases the amount of pollution in the air. People rely on vehicles to accommodate life sustaining necessities, such as food and a vehicle are necessary to travel to and from work. Since the 1970s, most Americans consider a car to be very necessary. Now, today it is probably very hard to manage without a car. So was the case in a research survey conducted by Pew Research Studies (2009), Americans indicated that having a vehicle was a greater necessity than any other item. So with the demand for vehicles period at such a high rate, why not also strive to protect our environment as well. Essentially vehicles are required in order for us to perform the necessary tasks that are required to keep our cities and local governments running, but the harsh reality is that driving vehicles daily can increase the amount of pollution emissions in the air,
