Some people say these experiments are cruel, and animals should not be used. While others say they would rather see these experiments done on animals instead of humans themselves. b. Thesis statement- Animal experimentation for medical purposes should be carried out, instead of scientist performing human tests. c. Main points- My main points are; medical advances for humans due to animal experiments, medical advances for animals due to animal experimentation, how the animals are really treated, laws that are enforced, and why animals are used. 2.
How is it that humans can test on animals, while the animals feel everything that humans feel? It shouldn’t be okay to test on animals because they have the same pain tolerance as humans do. The testing on animals is dangerous and it is harming the animals; it is cruel to the animals by keeping the animals locked up in cages, humans use the animals for testing the products that the humans use for the use of humans only, and it is unfair to the animals by keeping them in the lab and not letting the animals run around. Humans shouldn’t be able to test on animals. The humans that say testing on animals helps the United States with the problems that are going on and make sure the product is safe to use so it can be tested on animals to see if it will harm the humans before the use.
With biotechnology, there are almost no limits to what can be achieved by medicine. However, the development of technology is often paused, based on our ethical attitudes. Is it, for example, Is it okay to sort out the disabled or specific aesthetic qualities you do not like? Is it wrong to experiment with fetuses, even if it can save lives? In the case of biotechnology, many imagine the worst possible scenarios that the subject could cause.
However, carrying out research on animals means that important theories can be tested that would otherwise be too wrong to test on humans. As shown by Skinner’s research on operant conditioning that involved pigeons locked in cages and first starved. Another weakness is that because behaviourists believe all behaviour is learnt, sometimes behavioural therapies for disorders cannot actually cure someone, only remove certain behaviours caused by the disorder. For example if someone was suffering from depression, a big part of depression is how the person thinks but the behaviourist perspective may not be able to change the way someone thinks because it ignores cognitive processes; meaning the
Ethical issues with human participants in psychological researchThe term ethics is used to refer to how we should treat humans and animals in Psychology Experiments. The British Psychology Society (BPS) contains a list of all the ethics relating to experiments and responsibilities that psychologists have such as working with humans, animals and psychological practitioners. There are many strengths and weaknesses of the guideline’s. One advantage is that psychologists can work within a given frame work and aware of what they should and shouldn’t do. Another strength of the guidelines is that it is protecting the public which means more people will volunteer for experiments as they know they’re safe and what rights they have.
If a simple chip has the power to mimic the functions of the human body, then it is a huge resource to research. Animals are not needed for testing with such a wide range of alternatives. These new methods stretch each dollar spent on experimentation because the cost of the replicas and chip are only a fraction of the cost of animal experimentation. Alternatives provide a chance for medical
What make this opinion credible is that people may disagree. 7. It makes the evidence persuasive by making the audience feel empathy for animals and they are smart, more like us than we imagined, by saying they have emotion. 8. I think very well because Rifkin uses scientific facts, which sound very accurate.
“Spaying is a general term used to describe the ovariohysterectomy of a female animal” while “Neutering is a general term used to describe the castration of a male animal (American Humane Association, 2011).” In more simple terms, spaying and neutering renders the animal sterile through surgical means, and therefore, it permanently prevents them from having litters. In addition to the sterilization caused by these procedures, there are also health benefits that arise from having your pet spayed or neutered. According to the American Humane Association, there are both instant and long term benefits of these procedures. A spayed a female cat “eliminates the constant crying and nervous pacing,” and “eliminates the messiness associated with the heat cycle (American Humane Association, 2011)” for female dogs. In both male cats and dogs, neutering can “prevent certain undesirable sexual behaviors, such as urine marking, humping, male aggression and the urge to roam.” Also, animals in multi-pet houses are far more likely to get along with one another if they are “fixed.” Long term health benefits for spayed females of both species (when completed before the animal’s first “heat” cycle) include nearly completely eliminating the risk of breast cancer, and fully eliminating any chance of uterine infections and uterine cancer.
Modern day veterinarians with high levels of education are needed for care and management of animals in the 21st century. The nature of veterinarians is to care for the health of animals and protect humans against diseases. Veterinarians diagnose animal health problems and also vaccinate against diseases such as distemper and rabies that will harm animal’s health. They also treat and dress wounded animals so the wound will not get infected. However, veterinarians would medicate animals who are suffering from illnesses or infections to soothe the pain.
Back then she had realize that animals have emotions and we need to treat them equally. She also realize in what conditions animals are kept and scientists believe that “animal testing is the only way forward for medical research” ( p. 178). For instance scientists have included chimpanzees in medical research for AIDS, which the author argues that chimpanzee’s genetic makeup is different from ours and is a shame to still use them of this kind of research. However the law requires testing all sorts of drugs on animals before is giving to human
