Woodson also stressed that society did not make a valid effort in trying to domesticate the African-American after the oppression of slavery ended. The black box represents tradition. “Mr. Summers spoke frequently to the villagers about making a new black box but no one like to upset even as much tradition as was represented by the black box” (Jackson2). This quote represents the significance of tradition, which is what the box represents. Mr. Summers was in charge of the lottery, he held the power in town for as long as he holds the black box.
When people tend to hear the word tradition, without a doubt they would think of something in relation to good or positive. Yet it was a different scenario in “The Lottery” and was very shocking to many readers. People were stoned and killed year after year for apparently no reason other than it being a tradition. No one knows where it came from or how it all started, they just kept it running. Everyone in town participated in the lottery from even the youngest children to the oldest people.
He was particularly not very fond of Thomas Jefferson, who he thought to be a racist. In his “Appeal in Four Articles” we can detect the tone and seriousness in his voice right away. This is obviously not a topic he takes lightly. For instance, the writer claims that the book Uncle Tom’s Cabin and its common predecessor who attacks the topic of slavery in order for the abolitionists to unite together and fight for the same beliefs, isn’t fair or moral since they were disrupting the peaceful state that the U.S was in and shifting the people apart even more. On the other hand, the other passage written by the Southern literary messenger of Richmond also opposed Mrs. Stowe;s tale but he/she had a very biased opinion towards the South so he/she just argued using his/her untrustworthy opinion and very little knowledge. He asks Richard what the co-workers had said and that they would be punished but Richard’s fear is too great and just accepts his pay and leaves. White supremacy is shown clearly in this instance where his co-workers feel that they had every right to scare a child and make him feel completely inferior. They did not want African Americans to feel like they had a voice, equality and certainly did not want blacks to feel as if they were someone of importance. The fact that Southern whites fear and discourage black migration to the North exposes the degree to which their pride and even their very economic welfare depends on the presence of blacks. Racism is a means to an end, as oppressors employ racist measures in order to achieve power over another group.

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee In To Kill a Mockingbird, the oppressed and misunderstood are portrayed in the characters Tom Robinson and Boo Radley. Though the lives of the two characters are very different, they both share many common experiences and who do nothing but try to live their lives as good people, Tom is killed and Boo is almost destroyed by the ignorant people that live in Maycomb. The book is set in the South of America in the 1930’s. Racial discrimination against black people was not against the law in the south. Black slaves were not entitled to the education and laws that their white masters had and to put up with brutality because of this.
“In literature, evil often triumphs but never conquers.” I generally thought that this quote meant that the Bad guys may win the battle but he wont win the war. I for the most part agree with this quote. The novel “Raisin in the Sun” by Hansberry shows a great depiction of how the quote applies in literature, when Walter is told that they couldn't move to their new neighborhood because they are black, and then regains his honor. “Speak” by Anderson has a perfect example as Melinda was raped in the beginning and then gets back at Andy Evans through violence. In the novel “Raisin in the Sun”, when Walter tells Mr.Linder that they wont be moving into the new house in clyborn park is when Walter lost all of his honor.
