William Shakespeare is considered by many to be the greatest dramatist the world has ever known; as well as the finest poet who has written in the English language.   No other writer’s plays have been produced so many times in so many countries; and no poet’s verse has been so widely read in so many different lands. Shakespeare’s works have been translated into more languages than any book in the world except the Bible.   Othello, one of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies, is believed to have been written around1603, during the period of his most mature works.   At the time, Shakespeare’s purpose was deeply serious, and his characters were the most profound.   Iago, one of Shakespeare’s most villainous and scheming characters, is the main source of convulsion in Othello because he effectively manipulates three central characters: Othello, the Moorish general in the Venetian army, Desdemona, the beautiful wife of Othello, and Roderigo, the wealthy young gentleman pursuing Desdemona.
The play opens on a street in Venice and there is a heated discussion taking place between Roderigo and Iago.   Othello has just eloped with Desdemona, the daughter of a Venetian senator named Brabantio.   Roderigo is upset because he loves Desdemona.   Iago reveals that he hates Othello for appointing Cassio, an inexperienced soldier, as his lieutenant instead of him.   Iago indicates that he continues to follow Othello only to serve his own purposes.   Iago convinces Roderigo to tell Brabantio about the elopement.   Brabantio is upset and goes after Othello.   Meanwhile, Iago hurries to warn Othello.   Before Brabantio reaches Othello, news arrives that the Turks are going to attack Cyprus.   While advising the Duke of Venice, Brabantio arrives and accuses Othello of enticing his daughter.   Othello defends himself successfully and leaves for Cyprus along with Desdemona, Cassio, Iago, and Emelia, Iago’s wife.   Iago also urges Roderigo to make the trip in order to pursue Desdemona.   They arrive in...
