Shakespeare Movies: the Resemblances and Dissimilarities Between Romeo & Juliet and Shakespeare in Love

In the late 1500s, William Shakespeare, an English poet, had produced many successful literary works. His works seem to remain ‘immortal’, as not few of them are still very famous by now, even to the people who don’t have the intension to study his works, or any artistic literature piece written by other poets. One of the most popular plays Shakespeare wrote is titled Romeo and Juliet, which, briefly, the story tells about two young people who fall in love in Verona, Italy. However they come from two different families that have been loathing each other since forever. There are many adaptations of the play, such as the movies Romeo & Juliet, and Shakespeare in Love. Similarities and dissimilarities can be found in the two by all means. Romeo & Juliet was released in 1968, directed by Franco Zeffirelli. This is simply the production of the original play into a film. While Shakespeare in Love was released in 1998, directed by John Madden. Although it’s not the complete adaptation of the original play, the movie is basically about the fictional Shakespeare’s love affair that inspired him to put the ideas in his play Romeo & Juliet. In Shakespeare in Love, there’s a scene where Shakespeare fell in love with the daughter of a wealthy trader, Viola de Lesseps, when he unexpectedly saw her for the first time at a dance. This really connects well to Romeo & Juliet, because in the original play, Romeo Montague was spying at a Capulet family’s dance when he accidentally saw Juliet. In both movies, the main protagonists have affection to each other in a situation where everything isn’t there to support and agree with them. The male character has been visiting and seeing the female character in disguise, so they stay hidden.
