The sociological state of the United States is a constantly changing entity with numerous different parts, peoples, ideals and focuses. As any “modern” society dealing with those aspects is a strain an as such it changes, it alters its structure and the people with it to meet the many different and various needs of the people who make up its population. Movements such as the women’s movement, current issues with perspectives on gender, stereotypes on race and the constantly changing face of marriage and family. Previously marriage was simply based off of finances, however in more recent history marriage has trended towards marriage for sake of love. This has brought up a number of issues that society must address. This includes gay marriage and all other forms of marriage that do not fall strictly under the category of the initial definition of the protestant founders of this country. This is brought into question because all of the financial aspects that where the main focus of marriage previously are no longer the main or sole focus, though they still hold a great deal of importance. Issues such as insurance, next of kin, and all other financially relatable aspects of marriage, which previously where only attributed to a male female couples now are equally concerns for multiple different types of relationship. The issues that we address, as individuals, in relationships, as demographics, and as a society are era specific. Marriage is being constantly redefined to fit the changing society. In the reading What Is Marriage For? written by E.J. Graff there are two questions that are brought up. It questions how, for the first time in western history, there is a debate on the recognition of the relationship between two individuals of the same gender, in marriage.
