Servant Leadership Paper PSC-420 January 28, 2011 Servant Leadership Paper In today’s world you see that servant leadership is associated with the Bible and Jesus Christ. If you look at the Bible you can find versus that are linked to servant leadership and how Jesus Christ applied principles of servant leadership into his teachings and life. The characteristics of servant leadership as seen by Robert Greenleaf are “listening, empathy healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment to the growth of people and building the community (John Wiley & Sons, 2003)”. I agree that servant leadership is compatible with most religions and philosophies that are out there. Most religious leaders out there serve the people and community first. The two religions that I’m going to associate servant-leadership too are Christianity and Judaism. In Christianity and Judaism you see that the pastor and Rabbi have the role of listening to the congregation and community that they serve to help make their followers and community grow and to help with any issues that they may have. The listening skills are important for them to have because they are the ones that the people come to when they have problems. As a pastor and rabbi are good listeners, they also need to be skilled in empathy. Romans 12:15 states “Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep (ESV)”. This is true of these leaders because they get to know the people and the community and are able to empathies and help them heal over time. In religion you have to be aware of your surroundings and the people that are in your congregation. A religious servant leader that is aware of what is going on in his congregation will be able to find and help those that are in trouble and need.
