CM206: Interpersonal Communications Unit 3: Self-Concept 1. Describe a time when you tried to bring about a change in your self-concept and were not successful in doing so. * Trying to recall a time where I had to bring about a change in my self-concept and was not successful is a bit difficult since I try not to change the way I am, without realizing it at least. I do remember one time when I first started my new job. I was just beginning to get to know everyone. I have a tendency to not think before I speak and I was trying my hardest to start thinking before I speak especially when others feel that they can trust me with things since I trusted them. Well I was talking to another co-worker and accidently let something I was told in private slip. My self-concept on thinking before I spoke failed. I am still working on it today but it is beginning to get better. Luckily too my friendship with the one co-worker is still intact even after I spoke something I wasn’t supposed too. 2. Summarize the guidelines for improving self-concept in our textbook and explain how each might apply to a change in self-concept. * There are four guidelines for improving self-concept. The first one is to make a firm commitment to personal growth. It is one of the most difficult and important guidelines to follow (Wood, 2010, p56). When this step is taken we must apply ourselves to our personal growth and put forth energy rather than just saying we are going to do it. It might apply to a change in self-concept by realizing that you need to grow into yourself and realize what needs changed or doesn’t. Commitment cannot bring change alone. The second guideline is gain and use knowledge to support personal growth. We learn new things about ourselves from others as well as from ourselves when we are in different situations. There is a model called the Jonari Window model
