Hotel security plays a vital role in the success of an establishment because once an incident occurs like a fire outbreak for example and the situation was not properly contained, it would cause a negative impact on the hotel’s reputation. In turn, building back consumers trust and getting them back to stay with the property would take a long time. This would then result to loss of substantial revenue which could be prevented if policy and procedures were in place or conducting training programs to promote guest and employee safety. Therefore, safety of the hotel guest, staff and property should never be compromised, hence I would agree with the above statement. This essay would be looking at 2 cases of the Jakarta bombing in 2003 and 9/11 attacks that shook the hospitality industry, and how the industry took an approach to improving their security procedures. Jakarta’s JW Marriott and Ritz Carlton were hit by terrorist suicide bombers in 2009. There were 9 casualties and many were injured. The terrorists actually checked into the hotel with their bomb making materials 2 days prior to the attack, which went undetected by the hotel’s security protocol. Before, attacks were carried out by cars containing explosive materials. Today, they attack from inside the hotels. The terrorist have become more efficient and sophisticated. (Norimitsu Onishi, 2009) As such, the hospitality industry should take extra measures and keep abreast of their security measures. After the bombing event, hotels in Jakarta beefed up their security measures and procedures to prevent a similar attack. Major hotels have some of the tightest security in the world, which include airport styled metal detectors and heavily guarded driveways with roadblocks.
