Each and every event has long lasting effects, not only on the victims and the first responders, but on the families of the first responders.. People are seriously hurt, sometimes killed, and damages to people’s property and public property can skyrocket into the millions at time. These factors leave a lot of unanswered questions. This paper is intended to address and attempt to answer these questions. Secondary Trauma: Who, Why, and How? Introduction When a first responder responds to an emergency call he / she does not leave his / her family behind. Although, the loved ones of a first responder are not physically present, they are at every critical incident with their first responder. The families of first responders are a constant thought in the back of a first responders mind. All first responders have to be able to manage splitting their concern for the victims of the traumatic event they are responding to and the care and welfare for their families. Imagine the impact on the first responder and his / her family when the first responder is summoned to a critical incident, especially when the first responder is called to respond to an incident that will ultimately have them away from home for a multitude of days. The first responder is not the only one worrying. His / her family is sitting at home waiting for the first responder to come home knowing every minute they are gone their life is on the line. When
