Certification Exercise July 19, 2013 NAME SEC 583 Professor As technology advances, financial fraud continues, and the country struggles, the risk of having security increases. The career in security professionals is becoming more popular every day and it is important that these professionals are certified. For example, to obtain certification by the Federal Cyber Security Professional (FCSP), certain requirements are needed.. The FCSP has five different certifications for security: FCSP Penetration Tester (FCST-PT), FCSP Security Control Assessor (FCSP-SCA), FCSP Incident Handler (FCSP-IH), FCSP Forensic Specialist (FCSP-FS), and FCSP Network Defender (FCSP-ND). Individuals who want to obtain one of the FCSP certifications must first earn a Federal IT Security Institute (FITSP) Operator credential to demonstrate their ability to understand and apply appropriate federal IT security standards. The FITSP is a certification body focuses on helping the Federal government certify workforce members in appropriate cyber and IT security knowledge, skills and abilities. The entire FCSP exams are highly technical and having the FITSP-Operator credential will benefit the examinee. Each one of the FCSP certifications is valid for only five years. After the five year period, recertification is required. “The FCSP-Penetration Tester (FCSP-PT) is an offensive certification developed to test a candidate’s ability to find and exploit operational, technical and management control weaknesses in United States Government information systems. Certification is designed for members of red teams and other types of offensive groups which proactively attack systems to test their defenses before the bad guys can” (2011).
