Dillard believes she must make her writing interesting, if it is dull people won’t read it. She also knows she must decide what to put in her writing and what to leave out, depending on how people would react to it. Faulkner doesn’t even think about that kind of stuff, he believes you should write about the emotions we experience and “help him endure and prevail.” Each of these duties are completely different, but yet, they both make sense and to help them
It helps to keep one’s mind fresh and with new ideas on how to deal with issues which I face during my sessions with a client. Self-awareness develops over a period of time and with experience. With time one can learn strategies to help in the development of self awareness so that personal thoughts and experiences does not affect this. Knowledge that is gained through personal experience can sometimes be a barrier when working but if one is personally aware of this, it helps to remove any barrier. It also question one’s own personal values, awareness and beliefs.
When starting with others say you should except that other may not care for what you say causing controversy. It doesn’t always have to start out with a disagreement, but using other resources to start out a paper is always useful because later in the text the reader gets to see if you dis/agree with what others say. Once you have used what others have said be sure to continue it later through out the text. It reminds the reader what you are talking about and it allows you to keep track of not getting off the main subject. If you start jumping around in the text the reader won’t be able to follow along.
Know what you believe in and be gracious in conversation with others. Listening to other viewpoints does not mean you agree but you may be able to understand how the other person feels. I feel taking the time to listen quietly to others is a first step in our private lives to prevent arguments or heated debates. I was checking the Thesaurus for ideas on replacement words for this essay and ironically enough this is what I found: discussion= conversation, debate, argument, dialogue, chat, talk Argument= quarrel, fight, disagreement, dispute, row, spat, squabble, contention This is amazing, apparently we can choose different words but all comes full circle and we land back in the argument culture. The first step is to follow Tannin's advice and stop and look at all sides.
Like it or not, the importance of a good education cannot be stressed enough. To Alexie, "reading" is more than just the reading of words. Reading is a way to open up the way one sees the world. At this point in the story, Alexie chooses to change the stories focus.
With both these goals, we need to find out what their needs are and address them right away. We need to understand their attitude towards the topic, by looking into their background. Knowing the purpose of our writing will allow us to take the reader on a journey to a greater understanding.
