In addition to what Lang Wood believes, Stephens claims, students who are taking the test suffer from stress in result of worrying about passing it. Stephens points out “negative results more often than not yield low-self-esteem, higher incidents of seclusion and lower academic progress. Children who pass the test are just happy to be done with it and really do not gain sense of achievement” (par.4). It is clear that the pressure and anxiety
School uniforms can also be a very uncomfortable fashion that students would not take a liking to. They also won’t be the “quick fix” that many people think they are. The first reason uniforms should not be required is that most schools across the country believe uniforms take away from an individual’s identity, so they don't require their students wear them. In today's world a person’s identity and having a good sense of self is important to the diversity that Americans have shown in the past. In schools that require uniforms the student body all look like the same person, very bland and boring people.
Their feelings being hurt by fellow students, also know as bullies. Being bullied can lower ones self esteem to a point of destruction one of the main reasons children are bullied at school is because of the types of clothes they are wearing or not wearing. Some families are not as fortunate as others and therefore can not afford to spend money on expensive name brand clothing. It is noted that some believe school uniforms remove the issue of competitive dressing and help children from poorer backgrounds who would otherwise find it difficult to keep up with the latest fashion trends(McDermott, Patrick). In addition, some school heads believe that school uniforms vanishes social, economic and class divisions and inculcate a sense of pride in students(McCarthy, Lisa).
Teaching Tolerance in America In the essay Teaching Tolerance in America, Author Dudley Erskine Devlin touches on the problem with the teenagers in U.S high schools “not appreciating and welcoming the differences in culture, race heritage and personal identity.” He describes how this problem is coming from bullies and the social elite cliques that single out the differences in others in order to “ridicule, taunt, or even bully another group.” Administration and faculty not seeing the severity of the problem, and not holding students accountable for the disparaging remarks and behaviors against one another is also mentioned as being a problem in his eyes. “Liberal solutions”, like talking about diversity issues in class, and having sensitivity training are not the answer, according to Devlin. Dress codes, gender segregation, id tags, more video cameras, drug sniffing dogs and anti riot trained faculty are the solutions Devlin says will effectively address the problem of Intolerance, and prejudice. Devlin cites facts from several different books throughout his article, and believes that “the class system that is perpetuated by student cliques is the most important problem in our high schools today. There are some really strong contradictions in Devlin's article.
If peers would motivate students more then that could help with procrastination. Peer pressure plays a big role in procrastination because a friend should be there to motivate students to do their assignments not pressure them to stop and continue later. Many students also procrastinate because of boredom. Students feel that some assignments don’t be interesting enough for them and that causes them to delay the assignment and put it aside. Sometimes students blame teachers for their procrastination because they feel the teacher is boring and not teaching right.
Having a mandatory uniform limits teenager’s creativity and their expressive side. Lastly, the uniform can be harmful to schools image because some schools may have nicer uniforms than others causing other schools to envy them and not feel equal and uniforms are all about making everyone equal. Students will most likely be in their uniforms after school hours. If some students are caught up in bad behavior it can make the school look bad and gain a reputation. Also, when students don't agree with the uniform they wear many of them alter
The Power of the School Uniform People make many difficult decisions everyday that possibly may change the future. When we think of future, we think of the young students and how our future depends on them. The awgovernment continues to find ways to increase school’s ways of enhancing young students’ minds. Enforcing Uniforms became a strong focus as a solution. Kent J. Fetzer expressed, “Our biggest problem with a school uniform policy is the anti-individuality message it sends.” He feels students lose their freedom when forced to conform to only certain apparels.
They alter their uniform by lengthening, shortening, widening or tightening them. Tension between students and teachers sometimes occurs, as teachers try to enforce the school rules, and students resist them. Little or no relationships to academics Opponents insist that there is no creditable evidence that uniforms improve school discipline or result in superior academic achievement. The principal evidence offered here is that some good students are scruffy dressers. There is no doubt that children can learn even if they dress as they want.
There is usually bullying in schools, but something that not everyone knows is that there is also racism going on in schools everyday. There are students and teachers that are racist and that should not be acceptable. A very popular racist phrase is “go back where you came from” that phrase is disrespectful in so many ways. America is supposed to be the land of opportunities not the land to be bullied because of your race. Kids go to school to learn and be successful, but how can they achieve anything when they are constantly being bashed on.
I also believe that mainly, students are at fault for this failure. The teachers are the easy ones to blame. They are thought to be responsible for the students education, when the student has full control over what he/she decides to listen to, absorb, and work on. Teacher’s aren’t baby sitters. They are there to do their job, and to make sure you walk out of the door with more knowledge than you did when you walked in.
