What Is School Psychology?


School psychology is psychology work within the educational system to help children with emotional, social, and academic issues. The goal of school psychology is to interact with parents, teachers, and students to promote a healthy learning environment that focuses on the needs of children.   School psychology is a relatively young profession. The National Association of School Psychology (NASP) was established as a doctoral specialty by the American Psychological Association (APA) in 1968.   School psychology is amongst one of the top ten hot professions.   The demand for school psychologists is increasing due to many school psychologists in the field retiring.


      School psychologists help children and adolescents succeed academically, socially, and emotionally. They collaborate with educators, parents, and other professionals to create safe, healthy, and supportive learning environments for all students to strengthen connections between home and school.   School psychologists are highly trained in both psychology and education.   Two or three years of graduate school is the minimum level of education required by most states. However, each state varies within requirements. Eighteen states now require national certification, in which students complete an internship in school psychology. Grad students must complete a Specialist-level degree program which contains 60 graduate semester credits, this includes a 1200 hour internship that prepares you in the following: data-based decision making, consultation and collaboration, effective instruction, child development, student diversity and development, school organization, prevention, intervention, mental health, learning styles, behavior, research, and program evaluation.   School psychologists must be certified or licensed by the state in which they work.   Before you choose a school psychology graduate program, be sure to check the specific...
