Grading System For some students, the grading process in our educational system is quite scary. If there’s one thing a student hates, it is getting bad grades at the end of the grading period. We have all received grades we were not too happy about. In a way, a weird inner feeling eats away at you as you stare at the letter. Giving students grades does more harm than good because it can discourage, hurt, and make the student feel like their not intelligent. I believe schools should replace grades with written evaluations showing the students strengths and weaknesses. Not all students are the same. We all have different strengths and weaknesses. Some students pick up material faster than others, while some struggle until the material comes over time. Receiving a failing grade is discouraging and can cause students to become careless about school. Failing grades can also cause a students overall class effort decline over time. Students become so stressed out and overwhelmed that they want to drop out of school. Another reason why teachers should give written evaluations instead of grades is because majority of students are hurt when the fall short, or fail a task at hand. For some students, failure is not an option. But is it fair to judge, or grade troubled students because they’re not as smart as their classmates? Most parents expect good grades from their child. When I was younger, if I got a bad grade on a report card, it would cause madness in my household. This not only distracted me from school, but also mad me feel like I wasn’t good enough. Feeling like you’re not intelligent is arguably the worst feeling your mind can experience. Being told by a teacher through a grading sheet only makes that feeling worse.
