Schizophrenia: Annotated Bibliography Knock, J., Kline, E., Schiffman, J., Maynard, A., & Reeves, G. (2011). Burdens and difficulties experienced by caregivers of children and adolescents with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders: a qualitative study. Early Intervention In Psychiatry, 5(4), 349-354. doi:10.1111/j.1751-7893.2011.00305.x The purpose of the authors’, Jane Knock, Emily Kline, Jason Schiffman, Ashley Maynard, and Gloria Reeves, study was to discover the difficulties faced by people caring for children with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders. The authors used a “qualitative study”, interviews, to gather information from caregivers, participating in the University of Hawaii Child and Adolescent Thought Disorder program, whose “dependents” suffer from schizophrenia-spectrum disorders. The authors choose a very interesting way to study children with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders. Instead of observing the dependents with their caregivers, which could lead to flawed data because the subjects know they are being watched and therefore don’t act natural, they interviewed the caregivers. Then they gave the problems caregivers mentioned about caring for their dependents numbers and assessed all the numbers from each interview to determine which problems frequently occurred. The interviewers were trained and tested by a senior interviewer to ensure there would be very little bias. The authors also selected a diverse group of subjects, each from different walks of life, to avoid bias. Based off the study it seems that the most common burdens faced by caregivers of children with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders are emotional burdens and demands and sacrifices. Though the study seems reliable, the information could be biased because the subject group was so small and they were all from the same geographic location.
