27 September 2011 Save Electricity on Campus: Education, Awareness, and Taking Action. In today’s society most of the world is trying to do their part in making Earth a more sustainable place to live. They recycle items such as plastic, paper, cans, and glass. The world also tries to cut back on pollution and energy use. Here at Bowling Green State University, the students and staff have a plethora of organizations putting forth the effort for a better opportunity to go green. One of the most important ways to help our planet is to cut back and watch the amount of electricity we use daily here at Bowling Green State University. The students and staff should start making the campus more electrically sustainable. This can happen by utilizing three tools: education, awareness, and action. The students and staff could easily start off by educating themselves on ways to save electricity. There are many books, blogs, and peers, full of educational resources on this topic. Bowling Green State University did a fantastic job introducing this topic by incorporating the book No Impact Man into freshman orientation. This book brought awareness on different ways to save the planet to the thousands of students who read and discussed it. Even today there are groups throughout campus who continue to discuss this reading and making themselves more aware of the small daily actions we can take to make a difference in the electricity we use. One difference includes replacing regular light bulbs with fluorescent lighting. Fluorescent light bulbs save 67 percent to 75 percent less energy than incandescent bulbs at the same light output. (National Geographic) The residence halls must have lights on at all hours through the hallways and the front desk. Using the fluorescent light bulbs is saving electricity.
