Secondly the ghost had shown Scrooge as a young man being visited by his younger sister Fan who told Scrooge it’s okay, he can be home again, and he’ll have a family, and love and warmth. Scrooge is reminded of how much he once loved his sister, with the implication that he could open his heart and love once again. If Scrooge loved his sister, why couldn’t he love his nephew? Thirdly the ghost took Scrooge to a lively party thrown by Mr Fezziwig, Scrooge’s first boss. Scrooge noticed how generous Mr Fezziwig was to his employees unlike how Scrooge treats Bob Cratchit.
A Struggle For Identity In the memoir This Boy’s Life by Tobias Wolff, Toby is continually attempting to reinvent himself for the recognition of others. As he and his mom travel to different states to run away from certain men or for the sake of money, Toby begins to change slowly. During this journey, Toby is left with no beneficial male influence. This causes him to develop few behavioral problems. For instance, since he does not get discipline by his mother, he does not know any better.
Humbug! "(Humbug basically means nonsense or ridiculousness.) refusing to share in Fred's Christmas cheer. After Fred departs, a pair of portly gentlemen enters the office to ask Scrooge for a charitable donation to help the poor. Scrooge angrily replies that prisons and workhouses are the only charities he is willing to support and the gentlemen leave
“One day you have a home and the next you don’t” (Alexie 8), explains how he lives his life on the streets, wandering aimlessly through each day going about the same endless routine because he has no home to go to. His character seems to let good opportunities in his life just slip right through his fingers one after another but, does not explain the exact cause as to why he did not have the motivation to lead a normal life as he states vaguely in the text “piece by piece, I disappeared, I’ve been disappearing ever since” (Alexie 9). He seems to have lost his way and convinced himself that the only thing he is good at is being homeless. “I know it sounds strange to be proud of this, but it means a lot to me….Maybe you don’t understand the value of a clean bathroom, but I do” (Alexie 9), shows how Jackson accepts what he has become and cherishes what little life has to offer him to survive each new day, as his ancestors had practiced long ago, living off the land and being grateful for what mother nature had provided for them. In this sense, maybe Jackson needed to become homeless to get in touch with his culture and their ways, giving him back one piece of who he really is in this modern
In one instance, the forbidding weather alludes to the pessimist attitudes that will come; “But on the 21st of December, the snow began to fall. The flakes came down so thickly that from the sitting-room windows I could not see beyond the windmill- its frame looked dim and gray, unsubstantial like a shadow” (52). This quote symbolizes how Jim does not know what will become of him or his new friends. The uncertainties of how families will get by in the winter. Later in the novel, the Shimerda’s find it difficult to gather enough food to feed the family.
He starts by telling us about the weather “white snow” which describes that is winter. Then he starts reminiscing his home land how in Wisconsin, Christmas in his village is not about the parties and the presents but about being together and sharing together. And that is why he feels out of place because in college people only care about things that he could care less, and act differently than the way he’s used to be treated or being around with people that act a certain way. This actions make him very homesick and sad so he heads home to get away from that place he does not like and calm his feelings of alienation. When the narrator gets home, he
How is Scrooge portrayed in the novel? On Christmas Eve you would think that people would want to be celebrating, enjoying the delightful day to come all apart from Mr. Ebenezer Scrooge, but a Christmas Eve visit from the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future teaches him to open his heart to the spirit of Christmas and to the joys of friends and family. In this novel Charles Dickens portrays Ebenezer Scrooge as a bitter lonely old man. He is a very cold-hearted, selfish man, who has no love for Christmas, children, or anything that even provokes happiness. The opening of Christmas Carol sets the mood, describes the setting and introduces many of the main characters.
My question to this was there a problem in Bartleby’s life? The narrator shows how Bartleby starts to just drift away, he starts off being a very excellent working to just not doing anything. He even begins to just stare at the wall. He is just there not wantingto do anything but just be there. My thought on this is that the lawyer is feeling sorry for Bartleby.

The environment that the protagonist is in, impacts his psyche. Since, he is unaware of his surroundings, he feels alone, and in pain. Moreover, his isolation, and pain in a new environment, impacts his basic desires for food and water. “I am not a child, to eat picked leaves! But the belly gets the better of the mind.” (Le Guin, 145).
