3/11/08 Boys Initiation A boy is ready for initiation when he falls in love The Scat Mulaj gathers together and walks in the narrow streets of the village searching for all of the boys at their houses. They stand in front of the house with the sacred flute and drummer. A little girl come out and asks them what they want and then she tells him that her brother is not there. The boy then tries to run away by hopping over his fence and sometimes tries to go swim across the lake. There are people waiting for him so that he cannot get away.
In the book Sam and Kate are caught kissing outside the school, Hattie Parker is the one that sees them, in the movie they are seen kissing in the school by Trout as he rides his horse. Katherine watches Sam being shot from the side of the lake in the book she is in the boat with him on the boat. The Warden in the book had dark red nail polish venom in the movie it was pink. Stanley found mud and dug it up and in the movie he finds a puddle of water. The treasure that was found in the book was less valuable than in the movie.
He considers carrying things through the streets undignified, and refuses to do it himself. On Christmas morning, Malachy and Frank attend Mass with their father and go to collect leftover coal strewn over the Dock Road so that their mother can cook the pig’s head. Pa Keating meets the boys on the street and convinces the landlord of South’s pub to give them a bag of real coal. They drag the coal home through the rain, passing cozy houses. Children laugh at them from inside the houses, taunting them and calling them “Zulus” because they are smeared with black coal.
One day, she comes across a drunken man underneath an azalea bush, and tries to cover his head with his hat. He doesn’t want to wear his hat so he takes it off. She then tells him to go home and take a bath. For the next few months, the drunken man begins to show favor towards the teacher. He brings her flowers, and carries water for her.
While stopped with the men the little boy noticed a fire across the creek. The little boy thought he could still cross on the stones as he’d done before, although the fire was in the creek. While he was crossing he saw bodies lying around with no heads and some were drowning (Bierce, Norton 409). The little boy felt like he had won another battle when he crossed the creek and threw his sword down. He realized that he saw buildings that looked like the area around the plantation where he lived.

Sure, it’s summer, but what’s more important is that it’s powwow season. Friends that I can only see in the summer come out, food that I can only get at powwows gets devoured, flows that I can get only when the drums are being hit hard and when the singers sing at the top of their lungs. What is powwow season? What is a powwow?

The way to rainy mountain focuses both on the landscape of Momaday's childhood and on his Kiowa grandmother. It is set in Oklahoma, where his ancestors migrated from western Canada. Through their contact with the crow Indians, they came to worship the sun, and an annual sun dance brought various autonomous groups of Kiowa's together for weeks of ritual. They were famous for their intricate bead work and paintings of buffalo hides which depicts their culture, religion, and history. Since signing a treaty with the United States government in the 1800's, they are trying to embrace the heritage and traditions of their ancestors.
