Same-Sex Marriage is Not a Match for Society Marriage, as defined by Merriam-Webster (1995), is “the legal relationship into which a man and a woman enter with purpose of making a home and raising a family (p. 358).” Most citizens in the United States agree on that definition that marriage is to be between a man and a woman. However, there are a number of people that do not, and that number is continuing to grow over time. Some feel same-sex marriage should be legalized; but most strongly disagree. A union such as this is not beneficial to the society because of its effects on children, its unnaturalness along with health risks, and its religious immorality. Most marriages in today’s society include children, both biological and/or adopted. Some believe that homosexual parenting is no different than heterosexual parenting, but recent studies have proven this to be wrong. Twenty-nine percent of adult children who once had homosexual parents’ have been sexually molested by one or both of their homosexual parents (Kiley, 2004, para. 10). This statistic was compared with only a 0.6 percent of adult children claiming to having had sexual relations with a heterosexual parent (Kiley, para. 10). This reveals that children belonging to homosexual parents are roughly 50 times more likely to be involved in sexual molestation involving a parent than those children who are being raised by heterosexual parents (Kiley, para. 10). “Children are the innocent victims who suffer the most from choices their parents make to experiment for personal self-gratification with extra marital sexual relationships (Wardle, 2002, para. 23).” Kiley (2004) explains, as a child of homosexual parents, he or she would miss out on the most valuable experience of being raised by a mother and a father which promotes the understanding of the different sexes (para. 15).
