Then eventually, it became a trend and the style became popularized by hip-hop artists in the 1990’s. The sagging pants become a symbol of freedom and cultural awareness among many youths or a symbol of their rejection of the values of mainstream society. Over the past two decades, sagging pants have emerged as one of the most infamous fashion trends, not just in the United States, but in many other parts of the world as well. Some people still believe that this notorious trend was an African-American creation. There are some who associate the trend of sagging pants with homosexuality and the world of crime, wherein criminals used these loose clothing to hide their weapons.
Young men whose clothing did not fit would just let their pants sag. The fashion then took another turn and men who were incarcerated and who were trying to let others know that they were available for sex would sag their pants. Somewhere in the mix, sagging became a not-so-sexual gesture and many men who were sagging just did it because the fashion was something they had seen and familiarized themselves with. Sagging became a widespread fashion that made it into the media largely through the hip-hop culture. Those who are apart of the black or hip-hop culture, then began to wear saggy pants 24/7 not meaning to send a message but simply because they liked wearing their pants that way.
He then gives an example of a woman who chose to post an article in the newspaper saying she purchased marijuana with her children in the car, instead of doing jail time. This example poorly supports the point he is trying to make due to the fact that, he only states how the mothers imprisonment could affect the family. I guess the issue of long term effects on the mother as well as the children due to shaming sentences escaped his mind. When a judge sentences you to be imprisoned for a specific crime it remains anonymous to those you do not tell, but shaming broadcasts it to the public. This can cause public stigmas that can be hard to get rid of or ignore.
As is the case for most viral phenomena, there are those who aren’t too keen on hip-hop Elvis’s lyrical prose. They fear that his overwhelming invectives can and will entreat harm upon his avid listeners. In spite of the schism between the lovers and the haters, Eminem has undoubtedly taken the music industry by storm; and in turn, our views and considerations. While the zealots of ‘Slim Shady’ defend his lyrics and context with phrases like ‘artistic expression’ and ‘free speech’, as made evident in Jackson Katz’s essay entitled Eminem’s Popularity Is a Major Setback for Girls and Women, Eminem’s cultural trailblazing comes with a less-than charismatic price: widespread acceptance of violence against anyone and everyone who falls within the crosshairs of his philosophy. People see this on a day-to-day basis, sometimes blatantly, other times situated behind the cleverly posed acceptances found in daily public life: Guy eyes a fetching girl and advances discretely.
Individuals have also made good arguments about the negative outcome that racial profiling might bring to our society. Obviously it has led the dominant race to have superiority to the minorities – racial discrimination. James Zogby, the president of the Arab-American Institute have made a point that he have seen a lot of dark skinned people being searched and treated with humiliation, which is really wrong – Racial Relations. David Harris, a writer and Professor at Toledo College, have already written a couple of books about racial profiling. He states that law enforcers think that they would be more accurate in targeting a suspicious group, but in reality, what happens is the total opposite wherein officials have inaccurate results in targeting the suspect—Race Relations.
Beatty tells Montag that with “a bigger market there is less controversy” however some of the authors were full of “evil thoughts” and they created and wrote content and compositions that were derogatory to many ethnicities and religions which caused dispute and arguments among many minorities. So the books stopped selling and books were banned- they “were dishwater”- so censoring books and tv programs was to ensure equality among people. By eliminating information and keeping people docile and passive with meaningless
114). This type of literature can cause parents to have concern, because there is a lot of racist language involved in the book, and many parents may feel that this may teach their kids that it will be okay to use this type of language everyday. Since some parents may feel that way about the literature, they may want to object and maybe ban the book from the
Society is immensely focused on eliminating prejudice words since it is believed they are violent. Eliminating words is not an easy task when context comes into play. Huckleberry Finn can use a word prejudice against African Americans and not cause as much controversy as the very utterance of the word by stranger. The author speaks about a memory on a subway when he over heard a group of teenagers using a derogatory term against homosexuals. He explains the fear he felt when he heard the term since he was homosexual himself.
The other issue that was highlighted in this movie was the rights that gay people had, or you could say lack of rights that they had. In the movie Milk, countless times you heard the word faggot being used and homosexuals being belittled by certain comments in the way of being threatened to be killed just because of their sexuality. Even throughout this movie police officers were no better in the way of condoning this behavior by putting down homosexuals also. The issue of discrimination against gays was most certainly portrayed negatively in this movie, only for the fact of it was trying to get the point across that discrimination against homosexuals is not ok. I think I both agree and disagree with how they portrayed certain issues in this movie.
How would you feel if someone randomly approached to you and tell you “you’re gay”? Yes, you, like me or everyone else in this classroom, would definitely be angry and baffled because you take that comment as condescending. It generally means stupid or weird, but as you all may know, the word “gay” stands up for something else as well – a homosexual person. Homosexuality, (or bisexuality inclusive), has been the key word for ethical, religious, social, or any kinds of debate in the United States in the recent years. Despite such rapid development of human beings and extensive globalization, our view towards people who are different from us still remains narrow and conservative.
