Friedman’s model views family as a subsystem of society and enables nurses to assess the family system as a whole, as a component of society, and as an interactional system (Stanhope & Lancaster, 20012). In this essay, the participating family, M family, was assessed with using the Friedman Family Assessment Model and given priority nursing diagnoses along with community health nursing interventions to influence the issues positively and effectively. Taking into consideration the impact of family structure, roles, and values, the effects of Watson’s theory of human caring on community health nursing is portrayed overcoming these factors and eventually achieve wellness and health for family, community, and all. The Friedman Family Assessment tool contains collection of family data in different areas such as identifying data, developmental stage and history of family, environmental data, family structure, family functions, and family stress and coping (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2012). In summary of the M family, this is a two-parent family in which 60 year-old RM is the father and retired nurse, and his wife MM is 59 years of age and currently still working as a nurse.
Nurses need to review the disaster history of their community, as well as how past disasters have affected the community’s health care delivery system (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2008). It is important for nurses to understand and gain the competencies necessary to respond in times of disasters before disaster strikes. The preparedness competencies should focus on personal preparedness, understanding roles, becoming acquainted with the health department’s disaster plan and communication equipment appropriate for disaster situations (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2008). Disaster and mass casualty drills and exercises are extremely valuable components of preparedness that can give nurses and other personnel opportunities to improve plans. Nurses should also identify limits to their own knowledge/skill/authority and identify key resources for referring situations that exceed those limits.
Community Health Nursing Emergency Response 725.8.8 Stefanie Pipia Western Governors University April 18, 2014 Disaster in Franklin County In the event of a disaster there are many people with various roles needed to respond and meet the needs of the community affected. The role of major public health personnel is to assess the incident for immediate health needs, severity of health needs and the potential health risks of the community. The public health personnel have specific roles, responsibilities and functions to carry out during the disaster to identify, manage and minimize aftermath. The public health nurse can assess for immediate health needs related to injury and disability. They can identify and provide health related education to reduce the health risks related to the disaster as well as prevention of secondary conditions.
Nursing shortages and the need to cut costs in health care organizations has led to an increase in the use of Unlicensed Assistive Personnel to perform tasks which RNs performed in the past (Kleinman & Saccamano, 2006, p.164). Effective delegation is necessary to provide patient care. The RN must know the laws of the state (nurse practice act) regarding tasks that may be delegated and also be aware of any organizational policies which spell out tasks which may be entrusted to UAP (Finkelman, 2012, p. 402). The RN maintains accountability, responsibility, and liability for the task which is delegated (Finkelman, 2012, p. 404; Kleinman & Saccomano, 2006, p.166). Using critical thinking and nursing judgment, the delegating RN must determine which tasks may be safely delegated, and communicate the task to be performed, instructions, and expectations to the appropriate, competent UAP (Finkelman, 2012, p.408-410).

Also discussed was the organization’s commitment to delivering charity care and providing services to meet the underserved patients. Also discussed was the organizations monitoring of patient populations. This is done thru random surveys throughout the community being served; asking for their input to identify needs not being met by the organization. I as a nurse can utilize the programs available to help serve the underserved, such as the language and communication programs available to help promote adequate communications with my patients. I can also identify needs of the underserved and present the situation to the appropriate individuals in the organization, and offer a plan to help solve or deliver the services
