Rural Geography Kwon Nguyen Rural Geography Introduction Human geography is the study of interaction between humans and the environment that surrounds them. In order to efficiently conduct these studies, one must consider the many sub-disciplines that are involved with human geography. This paper will examine the geographic sub-discipline of the rural environment. The term rural can be defined as a region of low population density, and limited urbanization. These regions are mainly related to agricultural trade, and relationship-based communities. Rural is commonly referred to as the “countryside” rather than the “city” which is more market oriented and urban regions. As a sub-discipline, rural geography is the study of the rural areas in countries around the world. These studies consist of analyzing the origins, developments, culture, and physicality of rural landscapes. In this field of study, geographers are inclined to examine these rural aspects and compare them over periods of time in order to conduct revisions for geographic developments and theories. This paper will observe five studies that relate to rural geography. These topics include: (1) the geographic impact on rural China, (2) healthcare in rural communities, (3) the role of technology in rural Bangladesh, (4) youth in-migration in Rural Western Australia, and lastly, (5) the difference in preferences among urban and rural backgrounds. 1. Household income in rural China Both from Henan University, Li Xiaojian whose associated with the Institute of Regional Sustainable Development, and Fan Xinsheng who is associated with the college of planning and environment, wrote a journal article called “Geography and Rural Household Income: A Village Level Study in Henan Province, China”.
