RUN LOLA RUN ESSAY FUNNEL: The average human society is run by men. This is a worrying condition seeing as 50 percent of the world’s population are women. In most aspects of life women have to counter a bias towards men, and fight against stereotypes of weakness and timidity. INTRODUCTION: In the art house visual text Run Lola Run directed by Tom Tykwer that is based on a repeated narrative shows the idea that women struggle against the patriarchy for equal rights is explored through a combination of unusual directorial techniques such as camera angles, props, costume and make-up and the structure of the film. Tykwer manages to encourage the viewer to consider how women need to be strong willed and decisive in a male dominated world. Tykwer also manages to show how Lola was used to develop a message in the visual text Run Lola Run. BODY PARAGRAPH 1: Tykwer used clever camera angles to emphasise who has power. In the first bank scene, Lola is viewed from a high angle to show that she is being dominated by papa. Tykwer also uses low angle when viewing Lola’s papa to show his power. However, in the second run, when Lola is dominant, she is viewed from a high angle to show the power she has against her papa. This shows us that women in the world can also be the dominant ones and not only men are. Camera angles were the reason we saw who was the dominant one at which time due to the angles looking down at the non-dominant character that was the dad in the second run, which gave Lola all the power. The results of when women show strength and determination can be best exemplified by Angela Merkel’s rise to power as the German Chancellor. According to Forbes magazine she is the second most powerful person in the world. Like Lola, she is determined to not let bullying males stand in her way.
