Would you wish to always be the one to have that great power over someone, the power that can make you have all the strength to demand others to do something? In the novel The Wine of Astonishment, Lovelace, portrays the destructiveness of power through Ivan Morton who betrays his people, loses his identity, and abuses the power to the extent of belittling his people.
Having a high part in the government Ivan betrays his people by refusing to legalize the Baptist church which was the main reason why the people put him into power. He refused to legalize the right of worshiping in a Baptist church because now he had a mind of his own. Eventually, Morton abandoned his community and his black family. He did this in such a way that he went to the extent of moving out of the community. Not only did he betrayed his people, but also he betrayed his parents who always tried and sacrificed themselves to give him all they could to put Ivan into college to gain a good education. Due to his high education, many people respected him and taught of him as someone great. That would get them the freedom, but unfortunately he betrays them.
Having an education empowers you to do many things and have the opportunity to go forth. Ivan, having a good education had a good chance to change the laws for his people, he had the opportunity to take away all the pains and suffering from the brutality they went through but instead Ivan just got trapped and started to lose his identity little by little until he set his mind that he was white, and being catholic wasn’t wrong. He moved from the community so he didn’t have to mingle with the black people and he treated them as if they were no good, like every other white man and woman around. Ivan was considered an phoney because he acted white and wanted to be white but in reality he was black, his colour skin was black and his birthright was black.
Having the ability to do something is different from having the power to do things to prove...
