RUBY MOON In Footprint Theatre’s performance of Ruby Moon they successfully managed to merge both the ordinary real world and the strange and unexpected into the same performance space. This was made possible with the use of light, sound and music, objects and furniture and costumes. Watching the performance of Ruby Moon helped to clarify any questions or uncertainties I had when reading the script beforehand. The use of light helped to set the atmosphere which was appropriate for the scene taking place, however, the lights used usually gave the scene an ominous feeling to match the absurd feeling to the performance. The use of light was particularly effective in the scene with Sid the clown in which he uses a dim lamp to light the room. This gave the scene a foreboding and eerie feeling and made the whole mood of the performance change as the audience began to feel more and more uneasy. The lamp created intimacy and atmosphere in the room. The fact that the lamp was left on after Sid’s scene suggests that he is not a real person and puts the idea in the audiences mind that perhaps Ray was playing the character of Sid. The use of sound effects such as thunder, rain and a train along with voiceovers from Ruby and music helped to increase the intensity of the performance. These elements of sound made the performance feel more lifelike which made it more disturbing. They were able to make the performance space very realistic with everyday noises whilst also keeping the abnormal feel too by using Ruby’s voiceovers. This gives the audience the idea of suburban areas because there are the regular things going on in and outside the house although there is often more than what meets the eye “behind closed doors”. The simple everyday sound of a phone ringing is not so simple in Ray and Sylvie’s lounge room. In some ways it is a symbol of their insanity because
