The Romantic Relationship, Sexuality and Gender in Mixed-Orientation Marriages Michelle Wolkomir Centenary College As a society, marriage between a man and a woman is the normal dominance of all. Not only do we expect marriage should be between a man and a woman as the ruling of society, but as well as romantic notions and physical sexuality. This romantic idea is a new cultural concept of love, started in medieval Europe when the knights are to protect, love and have loyalty toward an unmarried woman. As this idea becomes a practice in the hegemonic heterosexual marriage culture, romantic relationship replicates this general concept for gender and sexuality. Coltrane and Adams 2008; Coontz 2006 stated that, romantic love is the perception key foundation to not just marriage, “mutual affection and sexual attraction” but is also to “companionship, fidelity and monogamy” which “men are still expected to be primary providers and women the primary nurturers”. Since heterosexuality plays the most significant role in the social construct of gender and marriage, when gay marriage is revealed the spouse is likely to be shock and will no longer want to be in the marriage or in some cases will keep the marriage due to some factors that will be mentioned later. Some gay spouses would go on without disclosing their real identity and live their marriage life as a normal heterosexual, some would eventually get caught by their spouse or some eventually would come out and disclosed their identity. “At this point the heterosexual/homosexual binary that characterizes dominant sexual notions and practices becomes starkly visible and conflicted” (Wolkomir, 2009). There are three research studies that consist of 45 participants, examining gay-straight marriages.
