The Role of the Internet and Crime Information Technology in Criminal Justice (CIS 170) November 17, 2013 The Role of the Internet and Crime In the past 10 years, internet has advanced into a fast, widely, affordable way to complete a variety of tasks. People are now able to pay their bills online, shop, research information of any nature, and much more because of the internet. Although this technology has made life easier, it has complicated it as well. Computer crimes have been a growing issue amongst law enforcement. The Department of Homeland Security has created a number of units to investigate these crimes. The Cyber Crimes Unit investigates cybercrimes such as: illegal exports, narcotics trafficking, commercial fraud, financial fraud, money laundering, and identity fraud. The Child Exploitation Investigations Unit fights against child exploitation. Between the easy access to information and being able to communicate without having to be near another individual, has furnished criminal activities. The internet gives away information just by clicking on a search engine. This allows a person to look up everything, from the ingredients to make illegal drugs to how to be a better parent. With the internet, a criminal doesn’t have to be seen or provide true information to anyone they are speaking to. A user can be believe they are purchasing an item and in the process just be giving away all their credit card and personal information to anyone. This gives the criminal the chance to take anything and everything from a person without their knowledge. Three examples of how the internet has aided criminal activity are internet fraud, internet sex crimes, and identity theft. Criminals are able to commit fraud quicker and easier through the internet. Consumers and businesses rely on the internet more often and so criminals will misrepresent the items they are
