Role of the Nurse in Healthcare Polity

The role of a nurse in healthcare and policy is a very important one. The profession of nursing has consistently been ranked as the most respectable profession for ethics and honesty. Nurses bring a unique perspective to health care policy development because of their educational training, professional values and ethics, advocacy skills, and experiential background. Significant progress has occurred over the years toward advancing nursing's presence, role, and influence in the development of health care policy. However, more nurses need to learn how to identify issues strategically; work with decision makers; understand who holds the power in the communities, state and federal level organizations; and understand who controls the resources for health care services. In health care policy development, nurses are essential in ensuring quality health care that is accessible and affordable for all. With their well-earned public respect and their strength in numbers, nurses exert considerable influence on health care policy, policymakers, and Congress in general. The health status of Kentucky’s children is one that will continue to effect generations to come. The issue of childhood obesity has taken Kentucky’s youth by storm. Childhood obesity in Kentucky has reached epidemic proportions on both a local level and a national level.
