“The directress is always at the disposition of the mothers, and her life, as a cultured and educated person, is a constant example to the inhabitants of the house, for she is obliged to live in the tenement and to be therefore a co-habitant with the families of all her little pupils.” (Montessori, Method, 78) The teacher in the Montessori class is called a ‘Directress’ as she does not teach the child but creates, guides, and directs in an environment where the child educates herself/himself. Before the specific roles or professional responsibilities of the directress, it is important that she/he has humane qualities. Her behavior in a class plays a very big role in the impact of how the children behave in the class. Personality wise the teacher: 1. Must have a warm personality and an accepting attitude towards people. 2. Must have a real love and enthusiasm for life. 3. Must be trustworthy and sincere. 4. Must be flexible both in directives as well as attitudes when appropriate. 5. Must have a positive regard for the child, as well as for oneself and others. 6. Must have inner freedom which allows for true exterior freedom and communicates itself to those around us. Most of the above characteristics come naturally to some people, whereas some others require making a more conscious effort to develop some of the characteristics. The directress should possess and develop the professional responsibilities: 1. Respect the professional privacy of parents, children, classroom, colleagues, and the school 2. Professional attitude regarding one’s work, whether at work or outside, must be maintained. 3. She must learn to distinguish between personal attitudes and objective observations. 4.
