Analyze the role of a manager within the functional areas of business Kareemah Amarsingh- Ishmael MGT/521 09/30/2013 Ms. Lola Jackson The role of a manager is to influence and reduce the number of problems that may occur within an organization through planning, organizing, controlling and leading. A manager must be prepared to act appropriately and decisively when required in order to bring value to the organization. An effective manager is efficient in managing timelines and setting targets that are both challenging but realistic that will achieve the organization goals and objectives. According to Paolillo (1987), the relative degree and mixture of the skills, namely, conceptual, human and technical skills, required by managers would depend on the hierarchical level and as well as the functional area of the organization. A production manager would need substantial technical skills and smaller amounts of human and conceptual skills. Sales managers on the other hand need significant human skills and less technical and conceptual skills. Finally staff managers would need extensive conceptual skills and less of human and technical skills. Technical skills imply a comprehension of and proficiency in a specific activity, mainly one involving methods, processes, procedures, or techniques. Human skill is referred to a manager’s ability to work efficiently as a group member and to develop cooperative effort within a group of subordinates. A human skill of a manager is greatly dependent on their ability to motivate staff to perform to their best capabilities.
