The evidence of sea floor spreading was further supported by Vine and Drummond, who studied the magnetic pattern of the sea floor. They found that the Earth’s magnetic field changes over time, because as magma from the mantle rises to the crust it cools but the basalt will align to the field it cools to. It is also found that on either side of mid oceanic ridges there were symmetrical magnetic patterns, so suggesting that the ocean was created at the mid oceanic ridges and as new ocean floor cooled, it pushed the crust away. Both Hess and Vine and Drummond found evidence that is crucial to the explanation of how continental drift happened, and it is very important in the development of geologists understanding, however other people found evidence to support continental drift also. Dan McKenzie went on to further explain sea floor spreading, being able to explain why new crust was made at mid oceanic ridges.
I shall use examples of the Kobe Earthquake 1995, Boxing Day Tsunami 2004 and the Haiti Earthquake 2010. The earthquake of 2004 was caused by subduction of the Australian plate and the Eurasian Plate ,a 15-20m slip occurred along the fault line which then caused an earthquake measuring a 9.1 on the Richter scale. This a very high recording on the Richter scale so therefore it would always cause devastating hazards , but human factors could be seen as making the impacts far worse. The earthquake in the ocean had caused a tsunami to occur within the Indian Ocean. The wave reached up to 30 metres high causing devastation to the 13 countries surrounding the ocean.
A Defining Moment in Canadian History: The Halifax Explosion Kristina Wantola CHC2D1-03 April 22, 2005 Mr. Nicholson During WWI Halifax harbour was a main shipping port for supplies. Most of the supplies from Canada were sent to Britain through Halifax. The main Harbour in Halifax is about 10km long and almost 2km wide. [1] The eastern passage of the harbour is too shallow for any ship larger than a small fishing boat. [2] On the morning of December 15, 1917 there was a collision between two ships in the harbour, which led to the devastating explosion.
On December 6th,1917, the Mount Blanc, a French-owned freighter loaded with thousands of tons of TNT, collided with a Belgian relief ship and exploded in the Halifax harbor. It was the largest man-made explosion before Hiroshima. The movie had a lot of topics to cover as the contents of the event were quite vast, the movie successfully covered it. It showed all the events in sequential order and dramatized it as it was taking place live in front of us. The film conveys with some visual power, the effect of the blast and destruction and suffering of the people.
This is an analysis on what is known to be the largest earthquake and biggest tsunami ever to hit Japan on March 11, 2011. The earthquake and tsunami Japans coast lies in ruins after the earthquake hit followed by the tsunami picking up everything in its path like cars, houses, and warehouses. Seismometers, strain gages, and title gages records the disaster. P-waves travel at four miles a second and within seconds warnings flash across the country. The S-waves shake the ground making earthquakes so damaging and the reactor core is shut down (Kerger, 2011.
Then the low-pressure system matures along the west-to-east atmospheric highway also known as jet stream; then a storm will move slowly along the jet stream that would produce the large waves (Warshaw 2000). When the waves are created we have to take into consideration that the bottom of the wave since it is a great factor in why the
It is also a possibility that there will be a “permanent” El Niño in the future. The article is appropriate for the class to read at this time because it pertains to what we have discussed in class. The articles mentions effects El Niño and La Niña have effected people in the past and we have discussed how El Niño may effect people. We talked about the trade winds associated with El Niño and the change in water temperature. Warm water in the pacific is usually pushed to the west but during El Niño the warm water stays near the Northwestern coasts of South America which can cause damages in fishing and changes in weather pattern across the world.
Early 1900’s a time of change and tragedy The explosion from the impact, the rush of water flooding every nook and cranny, abandoning ship and boarding the crowded lifeboats trying to stay out of the frigid water. The German submarine warfare in the early 1900’s took many lives, and in the case of the Lusitania, civilian lives. The world in the early 1900’s was influenced and shaped by many inventions but two stand out, the assembly line and the Ford Model T. The early 1900’s was a new time full of inventions and war, all influencing Aldus Huxley to write Brave New World. Henry Ford’s invention of the assembly line is a huge advancement in manufacturing. This allows many items to be produced, by people with very little skill and training,
The Bermuda Triangle is located in the western region of the North of Atlantic Ocean. The triangle is also termed to as Devil’s triangle, a name derived from the mysterious disappearance of people, ships and aircrafts under strange circumstances. Many people visit the region, hence it is ranked as the most visited geographical feature. Florida, Puerto Rico and Bermuda demarcate the vertices of Bermuda triangle, which spreads to less than one thousand miles on each side. The triangle has an area of about five hundred thousand square miles.
The Great Japanese Earthquake and Tsunami of 2011 On March 11, 2011, a 9.0 magnitude earthquake rocked Japan and sent a thirty-three foot tsunami raging down the coast to devastate their towns even further. To make matters even worse, the earthquake also triggered a nuclear emergency that has been compared to the Chernobyl disaster of 1986. (McCurry, 1) This earthquake was the worst earthquake in Japan’s recorded history. (McCurry, 1) It would not be surprising if people will still talk about it for centuries to come. The earthquake began off of the north-eastern coast of Honshu and caused catastrophic damage.
