The tail on every snow leopard is more than a yard long, and they do not roar like another other big cat. The usually age for a snow leopard is no older than 15 years old and they can leap horizontally about 45 feet in distance. Habitat Destruction Snow leopards live in the high rugged mountains of Central Asia while their habitat covers 2 million Km2 which is the approximate size of Greenland or Mexico. Their habitat extends through 12 different countries, Afghanistan, Bhutan, China, India, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. China happens to contain a total of 60% of the habitats compared to those areas.
The African species are the white and black Rhinos and the Asian Rhinos include the Indian, Javan, and the Sumatran Rhino (1). Today’s population consists of less than 24,000 Rhinos around the world. Nearly 90% of all remaining Rhinos live in South Africa. These beautiful creators weigh in weight on average from 750 pounds to 8,000 pounds and stand four and a half to six feet tall (1). Rhinos are also herbivores, meaning they are subject to grazing on grass, and some even prefer to eat the foliage of trees or even bushes.
Both the black and white rhino have two horns, the longer of which sits at the front of the nose. Size: The rhinoceros stands about 60 inches at the shoulder. Weight: Black Rhino: 1 to 1½ tons. White Rhino: over 2 tons. Habitat: Grassland and open savannahs.
One reason could be that the cheetah’s natural habitat is being destroyed. The grassy plain where the cheetah’s live is becoming popular with human settlers. These settlers’s are setting up homes and farms in land that was once held by the cheetahs. One example of this can be found in a country that once had an abundance of cheetahs, Namibia. In the last twenty years Namibia has undergone democratic expansion.
To me it’s a past time, an adrenalin rush, as well as a way to put extra food on the table. Deer hunting is a way to get in touch with true nature; it has been a way for people to provide food for their families for hundreds of years. Also deer are magnificent creatures and it’s amazing that they can be found all over the world. The cave drawings in the Chauvet Cave show a couple of horses looking in one direction and below the horses two rhinos fighting. They might have drawn rhinos because they are powerful animals and horses because they where a way of travel.
A population of zebras surprised biologists by making a more than 300-mile beeline across parts of Namibia and Botswana—the longest big-mammal migration ever documented in Africa. In the wilds of Africa, food and water come and go with the seasons, and animals follow. The Serengeti is the site of what most consider the most dramatic migration, with giant herds of millions of animals—some 750,000 zebras and 1.2 million wildebeests as well as gazelles and eland—traveling from the Ngorongoro area in southern Tanzania to the Masai Mara in lower Kenya and returning as the rains dictate. But when it comes to the longest hike endpoint to endpoint, Africa has a new record holder. As reported in an article published online today in the journal Oryx, the migration, which has now been observed in consecutive years, isn't on the scale of what goes down on the Serengeti—it involves just a few thousand Burchell's zebras (Equus quagga).
We only have five species remaining in the world today, and all of them are endangered. The Southern white rhinos were once found in large numbers across Southern Africa. They have horns and thick skin to protect themselves against predators like the lion and the hyena. But today, their biggest threat and enemy, is the human. This problem has become more public in the last two years and has drawn a lot of attention, which has resulted in international documentaries trying to raise awareness and support for these majestic creatures.
He trained in ecology and environment, first focusing on birds and monkeys, and later going on to work with the rhinoceros and the elephant. Besides being a biologist, he is a prolific writer with 150 published articles including regular columns in national newspapers. He is currently executive director of the Wildlife Trust of India, an honorary Wildlife Warden of New Delhi and the member of four specialist scientific groups with the IUCN. He has founded five different environmental organisations in India. As a result of recent studies, Vivek Menon has discovered that elephant poaching increased nearly three fold between 1990 and 1996.
Hundreds of millions of animals every year are being taken from their natural habitat to be sold illegally. The main types of animals that are being sold illegally are reptiles and birds which are most popular in the USA, Japan and Europe. In Australia, the main animal to be sold illegally is the black cockatoo species, which can be sold for up to $30,000. The demand for trading of illegal animals has risen extremely high over the past few years, increasing the value of illegal trading. The trading of illegal animals is the third most common illegal trading, the first being drugs and the second being human trafficking.
The Parlotones drummer Neil Pauw has decided to donate a painting to raise funds for tracker dogs to assist with Anti Rhino poaching. “I was inspired to create the painting when I was at Sun City.” “It was at the golf challenge and there was a Rhino force stand with horrific pictures of slaughtered Rhinos. I felt that I needed to do something to try and fight this horrible and unnecessary act of insanity. I designed and painted the painting to be auctioned off so that all proceeds can go towards the fight against Rhino poaching. It is an abstract acrylic painting of a white and a black Rhino.
