Cigarette smoking is a large public health issue as it is responsible for a significant amount for morality worldwide. There are multiple interventions aimed to stop individual from smoking willingly. Placing warning labels on cigarette packaging is one of these, as it a prominent mode of communicating the risk of smoking to smokers and also non-smokers. There has been significant contribution of research studying warning text labels and/or images on cigarette packaging and whether they are effective in communicating the health risk message to smokers, so that they become discouraged to smoke. Since the strategy of putting a warning message on cigarette packaging has been implemented, there have been variations between and within countries in the design of how the message will be communicated so that risk of smoking is conveyed to the smoker in the most effective way. This essay will review the literature on research that have looked into whether different warnings designs on cigarettes packaging have different effects in conveying the health risk message associated to smoking. However the design and content of the warning message on the product is varied. Within the literature the following designs have been researched upon, only text labels, combination of graphic image with text, and text graphic image on plain packaging, and different variations in graphic image sizes and/or font styles. Within the literature there have been themes that have been raised surrounding the impact of warning labels. These themes include impact on the awareness of the warnings, health risk knowledge and attitudes along with behaviors. How different warning label designs on cigarette packaging affect these themes will acknowledge whether a specific design is superior over another.
