Responsibilities of Having a Pet Have you considered owning a pet? As a student, you also need to consider other issues: does your roommate mind? Will your landlord allow it? What will you do with your new pet when you go home for breaks? Can you take your pet home with you at the end of the school year? Do you have transportation in case there is an emergency? Do you really have time to balance your life as a college student with pet ownership and care? Owning a pet requires you to think about responsibility. The basic needs of an animal add up quickly, both in time, money and proper housing. As if the beginning of the school year isn't hectic enough, there's another issue to think about when packing up and heading off to college: pets. But if the dog will be an indoor dog, choose an out of the way location that is cool and well ventilated. Puppies that are allowed to sleep in the owner’s bed will grow into large unwelcomed sleeping partners later in life. Outdoor dogs should be sheltered in a dog house that will prevent wind and rain from getting inside. The house should be big enough to allow the dog to enter completely, and turn in a full circle before lying down. During the winter months, a heavy cloth should be hung over the door to keep in heat and prevent wind and moisture from entering.
