RESOLVING CONFLICT There are many things you can’t control when you are dealing with your people and sometimes conflicts arise. Conflicts can arise from role confusion, stereotyping, and aggressive behavior. There are skills you can learn to resolve conflicts in a positive way. It is important to work with the other person when trying to resolve the issue. Using the I vs. you language is a helpful skill when trying to resolve conflict. Using the word I instead of the word you when sounds less accusatory. This will help promote cooperation and understanding and lessen threats to others and higher authority. Anticipation is another skill that can help to gain cooperation from others to in resolving conflicts. Anticipation can influence others and win respect. Anticipation can also minimize manipulation, harassment, and intimidation and overcome stereotypes. You should also keep others self interest in mind. Appealing to others self-interests makes you compelling. By appealing to others self-interests you can also gain acceptance of your ideas. Meta talk can help you overcome communication blocks by recognizing others feeling and frustrations. To use meta talk you must actively listen and pay close attention to underlying emotions. It is also helpful to set limits. Defining parameters and limits helps to avoid conflict and ease tensions. Setting limits will help you understand expectations and avoid misunderstandings. Bringing up consequences is also very useful. When using consequences be sure to state them in a non-threatening manner and you have legitimate power to enforce the consequences. You must also be willing to follow through on your actions. When facing conflict you must remember to always stay calm.
