REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM Male reproductive system The male reproductive system is to produce, maintain and transport sperm, which is a male reproductive cell. Its main purpose is to release sperm directly to the female reproductive tract during sex. It should produce and secrete male sex hormones as its duty is to maintain the male reproductive system which would keep it healthy. External organs The male reproductive system is mainly found outside of the body, the main external structures are known as penis, scrotum and testicles. The penis is a male organ which is used in sexual intercourse. There are three parts for example the root which is attached to the wall of the abdomen, the body and the glans this is shaped like a cone at the end of the penis. The glans, also called the head of the penis is covered with a loose layer of skin called foreskin. This skin can be removed during a procedure of circumcision. The opening of the urethra, the tube that transports semen and urine, is at the tip of the penis. The penis has numerous of sensitive nerve endings. The semen contains sperm knowing as reproductive cell is ejaculated through the end of the penis, reaching towards a sexual climax. When the penis is erect, the flow of urine is blocked from urethra; this means that semen will be allowed in order to ejaculate the orgasm. A scrotum has been described as a loose pouch like sac of skin that dangles behind and below the penis. It contains the testicles which is called testes, as well as many nerves and blood vessels. The scrotum acts as a “climax control system” for the testes. For normal sperm development it is necessary that the temperature isn’t warm it will need to be cooler than the body temperature.
