This report is being compiled on behalf of The Peoples College, exploring ways in which the canteen facilities can be improved upon making it more streamlined.
On researching the facilities, which were monitored over a weekly period, it was very noticeable that lunch times became very congested, with most of the students and tutors congregating waiting for food.
A short questionnaire was produced and over 125 students and tutors agreed to participate. The questionnaire was asking for opinions on how the college could be streamlined helping making lunch times more manageable.
On completing the survey, after close examination a proposal to stagger lunch time breaks which could help to streamline the flow of traffic at built up times. A solution to this would be to stagger lunch breaks. Lunches begin at 12.45. RTS (return to study) can begin lunch at 12.45 then 15 minutes later the Access students can go for lunch, and then the other side of the College can commence their lunch 15 minutes later. This process can be alternated between the students groups on a weekly/monthly basis.
Another suggestion brought up by students to help streamline the canteen is to ask for volunteers to help out in the lunch time breaks, for example catering students who could deal with the drinks and the tills, which would free up the catering staff in getting the food out in time to customers.
Another concern that was raised by the students is the portion sizes are all the same price. Some students/tutors have small appetites than some others and would benefit from smaller portion sizes (these are given when asked for by catering staff) but are charged at the same price as a full portion.
The food wastage was monitored again over a weekly period which appeared quite substantial, over 100% of food going out there was approximately 25-30% wastage, having a lower cost on portion sizes will help to alleviate this problem, it also serves to reduce the amount of rubbish that the college...
