Director Boaz Yakin's REMEMBER THE TITANS captures the heart of high school football while tackling the sins of its fathers, chronicling the true story of the undefeated 1971 T.C. Williams team of Alexandria, Virginia, which was the first integrated high school team in the state. The players represent a hotbed of racial tension, but as the team struggle towards unity and gridiron glory, Remember the Titans builds on several subplots and character dynamics to become an inspirational drama. It tackles the issues of race and bigotry, and does so in a typically blunt and head-on fashion. The year is 1971, and Alexandria, Virginia is under federal mandate to integrate its schools.
Tim Riggins is the bad boy in town, and Jason’s best friend. He is one of the captains on the football team, along with Brian (Smash) Williams, who is portrayed as the stereotypical powerful, black, athlete with a cocky attitude. As the season continues, it is clear that the coach’s career depends on the ability to get the Dillon Panther’s football team to the state championship. The new quarterback, Matt Saracen, struggles to fill Jason’s shoes now that he will never
Shaun Wootton 9DP Mr Dante Di Ponio 18th August 2011 The film Remember the Titans released in 2000, is a film set in Alexandria Virginia about the importance of friendship, teamwork and how the community overcame racism. It is set in 1971 and directed by Boaz Yakin. It is about how 2 schools, one black, one white integrate and make one school. The football team, led by Coach Boone and deputy Coach Yoast bring the racist community together. At the start of this film there is a lot of racism and a good example is when Coach Boone, who is black, moves into a white neighborhood.
The film ‘Remember The Titans’ is more then just a film about winning football games. The movie contains many more important themes that are directed towards the audience. Friendship is a major theme throughout the movie, especially through the characters Gerry and Julius. Racial tolerance and acceptance is displayed in this film through the black and white teammates. During the movie, there are many references to important historical events in American history.
As a way to assert his position as head coach, Coach Boone publically embarrasses captain Gerry Bertier, who is white and was showing attitude towards Boone. When the players head of to football camp Coach Boone, as a way to try to eliminate the prejudice between the two groups, employs the use of ‘mutual independence’ and forces the players to get to know each other and initiate conversation between the blacks and the whites. Coach Boone also used ‘sustained contact’ when he made the offensive line bus and eat together as well as the defensive line, regardless of colour. In one scene Coach Boone wakes the team up in the early morning and takes them to a cemetery where the Battle of Gettysburg was fought. Coach Boone then continues to deliver a speech about hatred and respect.
Initially, the adolescents were hateful toward one another, but after being forced to acknowledge one another and training together, the young men eventually became accepting of everyone. Additionally, Boone made sure everything was centred on football, not race. He changed the secondary group into a primary group c) The character I feel was pivotal in breaking down the prejudicial barriers was Coach Herman Boone. Boone is
Remember the titan’s film review. Film director Boaz Yakin has made the film remember the titans with the help of jerry Bruckhenier (producer) and Gregory Allen Howard (writer). It’s the true story of a newly appointed African American coach (Denzel Washington) and his high school football team on their first season as a racially integrated unit. Remember the titans is not all about racism although most of it deals realistically with the racial issues adults and children had to face in the 70s with no choice, but also remember the titans has a lot to do with family and friendship, leadership, honesty, humility, violence, communication and teamwork. In 1971 Alexandria, Virginia at the designated T.C Williams high school, African American coach ‘Herman Boone’ (Denzel Washington) is hired to coach the school football team of one black and one white school after the different schools were closed and are forced to join as one.
Character Guide: President Nelson Mandela: Morgan Freeman Francois Pienaar: Matt Damon Jason Tshabalala: Tony Kgoroge Springbok Coach: Louis Minnaar Dear Monika Byrd, I am writing you today for the request that a film study for Invictus be included in the next edition of the textbook. I firmly believe this film study should be included in the next textbook because I think it is a terrific leadership role movie; which is what the name of the book is, Leadership Development Studies. There are many cases in the movie where leadership was taken by two very important people and actually help built the nation back up. There were many times throughout the movie where I actually choked up because of how great he movie was and how it touched my heart to see examples of how great leadership can truly help “on and off the field”. I think this film study would appropriately fit in Unit 5, Building a Team.
Life lessons involving responsibility, trust and accountability are shown and taught by people who truly care about their team as a whole, not just themselves. In order to achieve greatness in life as an individual, one must be taken out of their comfort zone and take hold of the responsibility in order to accomplish a goal. The football team at Woodinville High School was not very successful during the years of 2009 and 2010. They failed to make playoffs both years and the athletes in the 2011 class knew a call to action had to be done to make positive changes within the program. Growing up as a kid playing sports with most of the guys in my graduating class since I was in elementary school, it was noticed over the years that the senior leadership who most of the athletes are conditioned to look up to, were not exactly leaders.
Jerry Bruckheimer and Walt Disney pictures produced the movie “Remember the Titans”. The movie deals with race discrimination on a football team, in two ways. The football team is racially divided, be-tween the blacks and the whites. It is based on a true story of the African American coach Herman Boone, who receives the job from the American Bill Yoast. It takes place on T. C. William’s high school and in Alex-andria in Virginia, and the environment is actually nice, it is very happy.
