Who knew that a simple Disney movie could be a complete guide to how to run your platoon? Remember the Titans can be the perfect guide to leadership. Disney did not simple just create an inspirational sports film. Leadership qualities of all sorts can be taken from this motion picture. From setting the example to making clear and concise decisions, they can all be applied to leading troops. While in JROTC in high school, I was required to watch Remember the Titans scene by scene with a list of words that were supposed to relate to the movie. Tact, justice, judgment, bearing, courage, knowledge, integrity, understanding, loyalty, enthusiasm. As a freshman in the program, these words had no value to me and I never saw how they could really apply to life. I felt that way until my Instructor broke the movie down for me. My Master Gunnery Sergeant had us watch the movie a scene at a time. After one scene, you would talk about the characters in it and what types of leadership qualities they had and what kind of leadership they failed at. Once each scene was broken down, you could really get a better general sense of the leaders in the movie that were doing the right thing. Here are just a few analyses that we learned in class: Coach Boone was a great leader from the sense that he brought the team together and created such a strong bond between all the players, but he also failed in other aspects of leadership. He was more focused on his personal success rather than that of the teams. He could often be heard speaking of just himself rather than of the team as a unit. Coach Yoast was a very selfless leader to this team. He could have taken the opportunity to leave his team and coach a different team the next year, but he loyally stuck by his players that he had coached for years on end.
