Assignment 1: Report on the Religious Life of Planet Earth Alana Robinson Strayer University REL 212: World Religions Prepared for: Dr. Lyndol Loyd May 4th, 2013 Report on the Religious Life on Planet Earth Discuss the criteria you will employ to determine if people on earth are religious — in other words, what does religion look like. Within in every aspect of life, the vast majority seek comfort, courage, and some sort of inspiration from one form of religion or another. Religion, as stated in the text “is a particular response to dimensions of life considered sacred, as shaped by institutionalized traditions (Fisher, 2011).” This is my first time on planet earth and I am curious to find out more about what the earthlings call religion. From what I’ve seen thus far, there are many different types of religions. But my people and I want to know just how religious earthlings really are. I have noticed that at the very least, for someone to be religious, they not only have to believe in a higher power, but they have to attend church, pray, communion, or participate in some sort of traditional activity. The American people long for an understanding of their life, and a key to life’s mysteries that will allow them to understand themselves and where they fit in in the world. In what I’ve named the human quest for meaning and purpose, some humans take to creative arts, philosophy, but the majority takes to some form of religion. Every one of the religions presents us with a particular view of life, expressed in its scriptures, teachings, and traditions. Describe three (3) examples of behaviors or beliefs you observe that meet the criteria you established above. I’ve found that prayer is a major part of any religion.
