Although some similarities between public and private police exist, there are some differences that cannot be overlooked. One major difference is private police are contracted to provide protection to specific locations or people. Over the years the need for private security has increased tenfold. This increased need may be attributed to the growing number of criminal acts committed by juveniles, drug users, gangs, or even cybercriminals (Clifford, 2004). It may also be attributed to the decreased number of sworn law enforcement, which has left many communities lacking adequate protection.

Changes to the criminal justice system have changed in many of ways since years ago but some changes have not. One of the changes within the system is how the law enforcement officers deal with people around the world. The population of people from different races is steady growing causing the law enforcement officers to learn how to deal with different ethnic groups. Because of the continuous growth of the population and crime, officers have been force to treat them all differently.
Organization Structure of the Police - Peel borrowed the military style of structuring the police. Peel’s operation consisted of police officer in uniform, rank, and an authority system of crime prevention. Today the system is a little different as they were first in place. There are many more crimes being committed now than the 1900’s. Although police officers are authority figures for which who should be trusted, police officers are not trusted today.
An integral component to the infrastructure of government is law enforcement. In recent years, police actions, particularly police abuse has come into view of a wide, public and critical eye. While citizens worry about protecting themselves from criminals, it has now been shown that they must also keep a watchful eye on those who are supposed to protect and serve. This paper will discuss the types of police abuse prevalent today, including the use of firearms and recovery of private information. I will also discuss what and how citizens’ rights are taken advantage of by the police.
Law enforcement: what do the police do? Some of important works of police are patrolling, criminal investigation, traffic and others. Modern police perform two major functions are authoritative intervention and symbolic justice. Patrol and traffic officers are primarily responsible for authoritative intervention, the realm of detectives and traffic officers are symbolic justice. Interestingly, traffic police participate in both functions, although are regarded as peripheral to most police forces.
While verbal communication can be prepared and even practiced, non verbal communication is usually involuntary. Non verbal communication, also known as, body language can be very telling of what the speaker actually means to say, or how the speaker feels about what is being said no matter how hard it is tried to be concealed. Public speaking is an inevitable duty of those working in the criminal justice field. When some crimes are committed, the media can latch on to the story and not let go. The media has been known to work side by side in helping the police departments, but it has also been known to work against those in law enforcement.
Police corruption is a problem that can be traced back to the early days of policing. It is a serious problem within most police forces today, as it is widely know that is it something that is not only hard to calculate, but also hard to reduce and near impossible to eradicate. The following will explore what corruption is defined as and reasons for why police corruption occurs. Reasons that will be covered that can be deemed as the cause of corruption are, the police cultures’ solidarity and loyalty, that a high level of discretion is used, which cannot be monitored, and that there is a corrupt hierarchy within the police force that is difficult to control. Methods to prevent corruption will then be explored, such as more rigorous recruitment procedures and the reinforcement of the motivation to do what is right.
Personality Traits of a Police Officer Policing today is very complex. Police officers are expected to be all things to all people and to make split second decisions under varying stress conditions. Police officers must be effective at what they do. The decisions made by a police officer could potentially affect the lives of many people. Being an officer of the law takes a certain quality of person and some personality types certainly do better in positions of authority than do others.
Relationship between Private and Public Police Public police are overwhelmed; they cannot possibly protect everyone, and respond to every call in a timely manner. Private police can fill in the gaps that the public police leave, they can also do things that the public police cannot and they are not bound by the same rules. Can the public and private police have a working relationship? In most cases the relationship between public and private police is strained, to say the least. Three studies have been conducted since 1971 to determine what can be done to fix the relationship between the two (Clifford, 2004).
In addition, it is not uncommon to observe police officers working part-time jobs with private security officials in order to safeguard valuable assets. Certain jurisdictions throughout the States, have giving special private security officers arrest powers as a result of the lack of public security officers available. One major difference that has been slowly but steadily changing is the mandatory training required for both the public and private security officers. The training and education a public police officer must complete in order to be hired by any department, is on average far more in-depth than that of a private security officer who usually is forced to submit to a standard drug test and a basic back ground criminal investigation check. But the educational opportunities that exist in modern day, the availability of these educational opportunities and the
