Relationship Between Private and Public Police Throughout most of history it has been the public police or law enforcement officer’s job to protect the people and property within their jurisdiction. In the contemporary day and age we live in this has changed, now we also have private police agencies that most of the time have been granted most of it not all of the same powers as public law enforcement officers. This is due to the increasing amount of people and crime but lack of public law enforcement, these private police officers often work side by side with public law officers to reduce the crime in their area. The road has not always been smooth for these two entities though, when private policing first came about and even in some places still have some tension between them. As crime has increased in certain area people have requested more police and also some situations through history have required police forces not bound by the jurisdiction of local law enforcement officials. This has created a need for hybrid police officials to have the powers of law enforcement but not restricted by the jurisdiction of other law enforcement officials. Sometimes this jurisdiction causes tension between law enforcement of all levels, one entity claiming they have jurisdiction while another thinks they do, when two entities have jurisdiction over the same area which is supposed to assist and which is supposed to take the lead. Most of the people in charge in each entity have learned over time to work with each other and share information for the greater good of justice rather than their entity getting credit for being successful. Many times when two entities work together it can take more time and or money to successfully complete a case due to not sharing information.
