Reflective practice 26/10/2012 2.1 Explain the importance of reflective practice in continuously improving the quality of service provided. Reflective practice is important way of learning from experiences and improving. Reflective practice identifies areas of practice which are good or successful and areas which are poor. Only when good and poor practice are identified can an accurate assessment of performance be made. Areas of good practice can be built on and repeated and any deficient areas identified addressed with training, advice and support. 2.2 Reflect on an aspect of your work practice, including its effectiveness and ways that it could be improved. One experience which I have reflected on in order to learn from and improve for the future is an incident where I had to approach the delicate subject of personal hygiene with a young client with learning difficulties that I support. I initiated the conversation with M in a quiet area in an environment where he felt comfortable. I attempted to be sensitive and explain the positives of maintaining good personal hygiene without directly relating the remarks to him. The conversation ended badly with M becoming very angry and upset and ultimately violent towards me. I have reflected on this incident a lot because it was distressing for M and resulted in my relationship with him being damaged. I concluded that it may have been easier for M if the conversation had been broken down into short sessions spread over a few weeks. So that the experience was not as intense for him. I should have been more aware of his body language and stopped discussing the subject when it became too uncomfortable for him. I have since spoken to M about his personal hygiene again and adopting the changes I have mentioned and M has seemed more comfortable and less stressed. Explain who would support you to plan
