What I have learned about professionalism During my first week attending class in College I have been learning about professionalism and the role of the caregiver. I have learned that the role of the caregiver is to provide client centred care, which is care to the satisfaction of the client/resident, and that is organized and set up with the client so they are involved in the decision making. Client centred care is also focused on the client/residents needs and requests. The role of the caregiver is also to provide professionalism, which is the sensitivity in which you perform your tasks. Some important parts of professionalism include, Confidentiality, keeping what is said or written to one’s self and only discussing it with other members of the health team. This is important as it helps your client/resident gain trust in you and helps build a relationship with them. Attitude is your attitude of yourself and others. This is also important because client/residents have the right to be cared for in a calm and unhurried atmosphere. Your attitude is very important in providing this atmosphere; if you have a bad attitude it may rub off on others and affect your colleges and client/residents attitude. Accuracy, this includes arriving on time for work, coming prepared to do your job, and carrying out your assignment correctly. This is also important because client/residents rely on you with ADL’S (activities of daily living), If you show up late for work clients may have to stay in bed and wait for you to arrive because they are unable to get out of bed without your assistance. If your working in a LTC (Long Term Care) facility it may not only affect your resident but also your colleges and their residents as their work load is heavier as they are now caring for your residents as well as theirs.
