Introduction Acupuncture is a system of healing that has been practised for over 2,500 years, having originated in China and other far Eastern cultures. Acupuncture is a gentle and effective treatment that focuses on helping the whole person, aiming to improve their overall health and wellbeing, and today it is widely used and accepted all over the world. It acts mainly by stimulating the nervous system, and its known modes of action including local antidromic axon reflexes, segmental and extrasegmental neuromodulation, and other central nervous system effects. Patient Profile ------------------------------------------------- Age: 32 Gender: Female ------------------------------------------------- HPC ------------------------------------------------- C/o Low back pain started around 4-5 months ago with gradual onset. Pain is getting worst day by day and now sometimes radiates to right side buttock. Experiencing some pain when wake up in the morning but it subsides as day goes on and worst at the end of the day. Sometimes affect sleep in night. PMH: Nil ------------------------------------------------- DH: Ibuprofen 4-6 Tablets a day SH ------------------------------------------------- Employed Full time. Work as a Hair dresser. Sometimes works six days in a week. She has got height adjustable chair on work place. Hobbies ------------------------------------------------- Swimming, cycling for charity What does the patient consider is the main problem? Patient A considers the main problem is lower back pain at the base of spine. Pain is usually worst after full day work. What is the patient’s expectation of physiotherapy/acupuncture at alleviating the pain? Patient A was not too much aware about acupuncture treatment. Her GP was referred her for physiotherapy.
