From the title chosen, the central idea for this poem is conveyed clearly. “Reflections on a gift” signifies the flashback of a memory, with emphasizing on the memory of a gift. The gift, itself represents happiness, appreciation and gratitude. Thus, it leaves a jolly mood to the readers. Then it moves on to the gift – watermelon pickle. The “ammunition was spent” presents the exposure of his innocence to the adult world. “Bullet”, “rapid fire” and “ammunition” are plosive alliteration. The poet uses these to symbolize the misbehavior of his childhood. As all of them represent violence and power, the poet indirectly presents the competitiveness of him with his friends. Then it was back to the watermelon. It says there is always another bite. The bite is abundance, just like the youth with no limit. The contrast between the quickly felt and forgotten is to present the he is easily satisfied and distracted. This further proves the innocence of the a little kid. He dives into the next round carelessly, enjoying himself to the fullest. There are no constant words in lines, letting it to flow with the action and thought of the poet. Thus, the free verse actually creates a pace of in the poem. The poem lets the readers to experience the childhood once again. This poem is very effective, as everyone has experienced the childhood that allows them to connect it to their experience, creating a similar understanding between them.
